DVD of the Week: V’s have Arrived on DVD

It is election day and are you ready for an invasion?

The V‘s are invading on DVD today, the ABC alien-drama starring Elizabeth Mitchell, aired last year a total of 12 episodes that are all out on this DVD set. V returns on Tuesday, January 4th at 9/8c with 10 new episodes that promise to build on last year’s solid year one. The show also stars Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.

The 3 disc set includes specials on the special effects that drive the series, an explanation from cast and creators about the mythology, and stories from the set as well as the usual commentary and unaired scenes.

I highly recommend checking this one out, it is a well made and produced sci-fi series and believe it or not had the biggest demo premiere of any new series last year. It is out on DVD today!

Thursday’s Upfront Frenzy: The Renewals, Pickups, and Cancellations

Thursday was a pretty quiet day in terms of upfront news as it is fast approaching. That statement worked until tonight when the craziness started!

Matthew Perry in Mr. Sunshine

It all started with the report by Deadline.com that the staple Law & Order was cancelled by NBC because of a dispute with creator Dick Wolf. That was quickly called out too soon as reports of troubles are true, but negotiations are still ongoing but unlikely to change by Monday. NBC reversely picked up the David E. Kelly/Kathy Bates starring vehicle Kindreds for midseason and according to THR, the intelligent Garza legal pilot which is a chance for Jimmy Smits to shine. But the best news from NBC, CHUCK IS RENEWED. Enough said. (The other bubble show Heroes, may get a limited pickup to finish the series.)

ABC took to the waves by announcing six new pickups of series following the announcement of the first drama No Ordinary Family.

First up the new comedies, the fantastically written by star Matthew Perry and pals pilot Mr. Sunshine and starring Allison Janney was one of the three laffers. Mr. Sunshine focuses on a sports center manager (Perry) and his friends, think of it as the male-led Cougar Town). Second is Happy Endings, starring Elisha Cuthbert and Eliza Coupe, and centers around an almost married couple and their eclectic friends. I have read the script by David Caspe flows nicely and is a good adult sitcom. The last official pickup is the only multi-cam by the network, Better Together, which features Joanna Garcia and Jennifer Finnigan as sisters who are both in a relationship as well as their parents. Debra Messing’s ABC pilot Wright vs. Wrong is very close to a pickup as well.

The Cast of ABC's Detroit 1-8-7

The new dramas on ABC (more pickups to come tomorrow) include the Michael Imperioli fronted cop drama, Detroit 1-8-7, which had a solid script and a very nice cast including the underrated Aisha Hinds, and The Whole Truth which brings back Joely Richardson to the Jerry Bruckheimer drama, that focus on both sides of the law, with the other side shown by Rob Marrow. Joely is one of my favorite actresses and the script was a refreshing legal concept. The third drama pickup is My Generation (also called Generation Y), written tremendously by Noah Hawley (The Unusuals), focuses on a class of kids that were in a documentary in high school, and now are being looked at once again 10 years later. The class includes actors such as Mechad Brooks, Jamie King, and Kelli Garner.

In terms of current shows at ABC, a personal favorite V has been renewed for a second season, and now multiple sources including EW, are reporting that Better off Ted, Romantically Challenged, Scrubs, and FlashForward, are all cancelled.

CBS picked up their first freshman entry today, Mike and Molly. The pilot about a couple that meets at a meeting for “larger” people is from their favorite creator Chuck Lorre (The Big Bang Theory) and stars the wonderful women Melissa McCarthy and Swoosie Kurtz.

Lastly on the cable side, partner networks TBS and TNT, who are both doing presentations next week, picked up new series. TBS greenlit Glory Daze, which stars a crew of unknowns that play 80’s college students in Wisconsin. Finally in a pilot started at TBS, Franklin and Bash moved to TNT and Lynette Rice at EW is reporting has been okay-ed for series. The pilot about street smart lawyers stars Breckin Meyer and Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

Stay tuned throughout the night, tomorrow, and the weekend for the latest in advance of the Upfronts next week.

Quick Takes on Tonight’s Packed May Tuesday

Wow, there is a lot of TV on tonight. Lucky I have seen some of it and below are my quick thoughts….

Julianna Margulies and guest star Paige Turco in a new "The Good Wife"

V – 10/9c on ABC With next Tuesday, D-Day in the V world both on TV and behind the scenes, as the season finale will air and ABC will decide the faith of the series at Upfronts. The prospects are looking a lot better now as the ratings have been steady unlike the other bubble drama, FlashForward. Tonight’s episode really serves as a prequel to the events of the finale and does it well. It clearly will be Erica vs. Anna, and that pairing has started in an unusual way tonight. Maybe the best episode of the series yet and the last scene will shock you thanks to great guest starring roles.

Justified – 10/9c on FX Back in March, when the Timothy Olyphant fronted series began I was very happy with the product, now as we enter the final stretch of the first season (FX recently ordered a 2nd), I have not been that happy with the product. The episodes in recent weeks have been hit or miss but the episode airing now is very much a hit. Raylan is caught up in a very compelling hostage swap, and the next episode after keeps up the high paced energy.

The Good Wife – 10/9c on CBS Oh how I love this show. Tonight’s episode the Alicia vs. Cary battle that was presented all the way back in the pilot. The episode focuses on Will and Diane’s decision that they do not want to make as bigger problems like the firm going under by losing big players. Alicia meanwhile focuses on how Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) is affecting her life while juggling a case involving a ugly rock-star divorce. Also, look for tons of familiar faces if you watched Damages.

Now, I have some quick thoughts on why I am so excited about tonight’s episode below, there will be some spoilers…

Old Friends, New Problems, and Sacrifices: A First Look at Tonight’s “V”

V – “POUND OF FLESH”

Last week’s return episode of V on ABC, established the goals and stories for each of our characters and for the show in general for the seven episodes left.

In this week’s episode, titled “Pound of Flesh,” the resistance ups its game in order to establish its presence with its own 5th Column friends as well as letting Anna (Morena Baccarin) know they are coming back with vengeance. Erica(Elizabeth Mitchell) is still very much worried for her son Tyler (Logan Huffman) and tries to get him to leave the V’s after they make a major announcement which you can hear in the clip below. As Erica’s backstory is more developed we meet her ex played by Kyle XY‘s creeper Nicolas Lea.

The episode is great, the story is fun and the surprises continue to deliver with many of the characters including Georgie and Jack, and Valerie’s pregnancy which shows some more creepy moments. V does a well done job in integration both the mothership storylines and the stories on the land in this episode and Scott Wolf finally meets more of the main cast.

V airs tonight after Lost at 10/9c on ABC in another magical episode that continues to show what a fine character sci-fi show this is.

The War is Only Beginning: My Advance Review of the Return of V

In November, Tyler was meeting Anna, getting sucked in by her force, Jack got stabbed by an alien, Erica was teaming with Ryan and Georgie to form the resistance, and they started by blowing up a mystery substance in the flu vaccine. Now in March, all those things are picking up again, on ABC’s reimagaining of V.

V if you did not know centers around Erica Evans (the excellent Elizabeth Mitchell), a FBI agent, who is thrown into a major situation as alien ships hover over major cities. Those aliens are known as V’s and they as they say come in peace but are really reptilian creatures that have a secret agenda led by Anna (Morena Baccarin). Anna also has a whole armada of ships coming toward earth but her immediate problem lies in the 5th Column, a rogue group of V’s that have been planet for years.

If you need a more length refresher at the first four episodes check out the recap below but the same girl who does the awesome LOST recaps.

more about “V“, posted with vodpod

I got a chance to see the return episode, the show’s 5th, and it comes back with vengeance. First thing, there is a kick ass fight scene between a visitor and Erica, in Liz’s signature Juliet fight style. Each of the shows regulars are given a start to their upcoming storylines in the hour, written by new showrunner Scott Rosenbaum. As Erica and Georgie, continue to get a resistance with Ryan, they try to incorporate a new member played by Charles Mesure, a mercenary that has much need experience. Ryan is also busy with Val, as she is having a hybrid baby and has no idea. She is having some unknown side-effects and fans of the original series will be very happy at what happens at the end of the episode.

Back at the mothership, Anna and her daughter, and Tyler’s boyfriend Lisa, continue to get Tyler to join their team and that includes an introduction to a very cool par of the ship known as the “memory chamber.” Anna also is dealing with the 5th column and she realizes this is going to be one long fight.

In the end, the episode is a great sci-fi accomplishment, it shows that even with new direction, on a new incarnation of an old show, the genre can still be relevant, emotional, and compelling in a very new sense. I am very excited to see where this journey will take as in the next 8 episodes of the first year and hopefully not last.

V is well worth the wait and debuts in its new time-slot after Lost on ABC at 10/9c Tuesday.

First Look: ‘V’ ends 2009 with a Bang!

V has only aired three episodes but tonight it airs its final installment of 2009. ABC has promised it will end the year with a bang but is that true….

What ABC Says:

“It’s Only the Beginning” — Erica works with newly-formed allies to uncover a biological threat they suspect the Visitors have been plotting.  Aboard the Mothership, Anna meets with a special guest while managing the investigation into the murder of a V. And Chad does a segment on the V Healing Centers, demonstrating their amazing medical abilities, but then finds himself conflicted by some of his findings, on the riveting cliffhanger of “V,” TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 24 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET), on ABC.

I have really enjoyed the last three episodes. After the stellar pilot, the episode contine with its mini-series like reveals especially with the last episode which (SPOILER ALERT) ended with Anna being revealed to be Lisa’s mother. The episode in a whole is the best hour yet but it over delievers and under delievers in some areas. I was not over impressed in the way the series wraps but I really like the direction is going. Where the show excels is in the relationships between Erica and Jack, and as we saw in hour 3 now Ryan is put into the mix along with Georgie.

The other “half” persay of the show is the relationship of Chad and the V’s which take a interesting turn with a surpiring personal reveal about Chad who is now spending a lot of time with second in command Marcus.

Also in the hour, some real stories from Ryan’s fiance Valerie, as well as more hints about the mysterious 5th Column. V is show I am fully behind and hope you are too. If you aren’t one of the 16.7 million viewers who caught the premiere, you can caught the last three hours, they are available on Hulu and ABC. There is plenty of time to catch up.

V airs on ABC at 8/7c tonight! It returns in March 2009 with 9 more episodes to complete season 1.

V’s First 9 Minutes

As you can tell, I am a big fan of ABC’s new series V premiering tonight at 8/7c. Below check out the first 9 minutes of the pilot, and I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

So what do you think? Will you be tuning in?
