New to Showtime: The Big C

Showtime has got another one, another great comedy I mean. The pay-cabler is quickly climbing the rankings of channels that provide quality, heart-felt and driven programming and you can watch their newest comedy The Big C tonight after the veteran comedy Weeds at 10:30/9:30c

The Big C stars the wonderful Laura Linney as Cathy Jamison, a teacher that is by-the-books and is just getting by in life with an immature husband and teenager, but is diagnosed with a terminal cancer and starts to live! The premiere is funny, sad, and is just a showcase to watch the powerful and awesome Linney do her thing.

The comedy is by no means perfect but it is the charm and infectious personality and performance of Laura Linney that immediately hits you. She plays cancer as well as anyone can and is surrounded by great supporting players including her wacky husband played by Oliver Platt (The West Wing) and her hot doctor Reid Scott.

Also in the cast is Oscar-nominee Gabourey Sidibe as a student in Cathy’s summer class. Each season of the Big C will chronicle a season as the first does summer, which allows for the series to go for seasons without it seeming like Cathy has had cancer for years and years.

Check out the premiere of Weeds followed by The Big C starting tonight at 10/9c on Showtime.

Reminder: Showtime’s Mondays are All New

If you have Showtime, make sure you are tuning in on Monday night with 3 premieres!

First at 10/9c, Secret Diary of a Call Girl returns for a third season which still follows Hanna aka Belle (Billie Piper) in her secret not so liked life. Here is a trailer of the new year.

Following at 10:30/9:30c is Tracey Ullman’s State of the Union, which is a sketch comedy show with Tracey potraying a crew of characters in varying stories. I have seen the premiere episode and it is rather funny thanks to Michael Jackson, texting, and Bernie Maddof. A great combo, and take a peek for yourself.

Completing the night is the new show La La Land, which chroncles British comedian Marc Wootton as her enters the Hollywood lifestyle in some unique roles. Take a look at tune in Monday on Showtime!

First Look: My Review of Showtime’s Nurse Jackie

NURSE JACKIEOnce in a long while a show comes along that is both funny but serious, sad but you smile, and has characters that are so wrong but for some reason at the same time so right. Monday that show comes along with Nurse Jackie. Nurse Jackie premieres Monday on Showtime following the season premiere of Weeds at 10.

Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco (The Sopranos) as Jackie Peyton the chief nurse at a New York City Hospital that is a really messed up character. She has a husband (Dominic Fumusa) and two kids, but also is “sorta dating” the medical tech (Paul Schulze) at work and taking pharmaceutical drugs at every possible moment. She is surround by loyal but interesting characters in their own right. Her best friend is Dr. O’hara (Eva Best), a rich snobby beautiful British doctor that loves expensive things and to always control the situation. Two other people surround her in the OR in a positive way, Mo-Mo (Haaaz Sleiman), her gay nurse pal, and Zoey (Merrit Wever), a brand new nurse that is so sweet but is stuck at the wrong hospital. Also in her life is Dr. Cooper (Peter Facinelli), a just out of med-school doc that rubs Jackie the wrong way, and Mrs. Gloria Akalitus (played by the great to see back on TV, Anne Deavere Smith), the boss around the hospital that does all the wrong things for the patients.

I have seen the first six episodes of this 12-episode season and all I can say is with every episode I loved this show more and more. It has such heart and inspiration in the most wrong and messed up way that you can’t help but be fascinated by what goes on in Jackie head. The show offers a nice balance of hospital story with great guests like Swoosie Kurtz, Blythe Danner, and Victor Garber, with Jackie’s personal problems like her almost-teenage daughter going through something not so pleasant.

Overall, the show is a success and you should be watching. If don’t have Showtime yet don’t worry, below is the first episode but make sure to catch the weeks to come at 10:30/9:30c on Mondays.

First Look at the poster of Nurse Jackie

Nurse_jackie_poster

Showtime has another great comedy/drama on their hands. After successful shows like Weeds and United States of Tara, Edie Falco stars in Nurse Jackie. The pilot was just fun, inappropriate, and dark at the same time. Make sure to check the poster out above and watch the premiere after Weeds on June 8th at 10:30/9:30c on Showtime. Look for a review at the first couple episodes before the premiere.

First Look: Weeds New Season Poster

weeds5_poster_blogA familiar face is returning on June 8th. Mary Louise Parker returns to Showtime in the critically acclaimed series Weeds. Above is the just released poster for the fifth season that returns on Monday June 8th at 10/9c then a great new series premieres. The Edie Falco fronted Nurse Jackie premieres at 10:30/9:30c and I have seen the pilot and it is damn good. It is a great mix of drama, sex, and humor and I really dug it. Check this all out this June!
