Fall TV 2010: My Review of FOX’s Raising Hope and Running Wilde

With the new fall season starting, new TV is bring us the good, the bad, and the mediocre, but how do you sort out the good and the bad? Here is what to watch this fall, so you can see the best new friendships, new loves, new action, and new heart. Now, FOX is taking a big stab at comedy and they got big talent, but will it mean big laughs…

What FOX Says about Raising Hope and Running Wilde (right):

RAISING HOPE is a new single-camera family comedy from Emmy Award winner Greg Garcia (“My Name Is Earl”) that follows the Chance family as they find themselves adding an unexpected new member into their already terribly flawed household. At 23 years old, JIMMY CHANCE (Lucas Neff, “The Beast”) is going nowhere in life. He skims pools for a living, parties every night and still lives at home with his family, including his MAW MAW (guest star Academy Award and Emmy Award winner Cloris Leachman); his mother, VIRGINIA (Martha Plimpton, “How to Make It in America”); his father, BURT (Garret Dillahunt, “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Damages”); and his cousin, MIKE (Skyler Stone, “The Mentalist,” “Dollhouse”). Jimmy’s life takes a drastic turn when a chance romantic encounter with LUCY (guest star Bijou Phillips, “Choke,” “Almost Famous”) goes awry once he discovers she is a wanted felon. Months later, when Jimmy pays a visit to the local prison, he discovers Lucy gave birth to their baby, who he is now charged with raising. At home with his new daughter, Jimmy’s family is less than enthusiastic about a new addition to the household. His parents, who had him when they were 15, never knew anything about raising a child and have no interest in trying again. With very few useful skills but their hearts in the right place, will the Chance family be successful when they step into the unpredictable and immensely challenging world of parenting?

RUNNING WILDE is the new romantic comedy series centering on a spoiled, filthy rich playboy who desperately tries to win the heart of his humanitarian childhood sweetheart by helping raise her 12-year-old daughter. The series stars Will Arnett, Keri Russell, Stefania Owen, Peter Serafinowicz, Robert Michael Morris and Mel Rodriguez.

FOX is the last 5 years has never been a comedy staple (minus animation), remember Til Death, but they are really trying their best this year with three new offerings this season (Mixed Signals comes in the spring).

Raising Hope, comes from Greg Garcia, the creator of My Name is Earl, and Hope seemingly lives in the same world. The pilot of the series about the Chance family, the inherits a new baby, is funny, damn funny, but it also features that same redneck aspects that made me not tune into Earl. When writing this I am very torn about this particularly series but I laughed, and I won’t lie about that but I did not really care for the world of the show. In the end, it’s the humor that comes out on top, and airing after Glee, it certainly will attract an audience and maybe the amazing talent of Martha Plimpton will finally have a hit. Martha FTW!

Airing after Hope, is a comedy by some pretty awesome people. Will Arnett, the Arrested Development crew + Keri Russell, nothing could go wrong, right? Well unfortunately, the pilot suffers from a major identity crisis with no discernible tone for Russell and Arnett to play for. The pilot was extensively recast, with the addition of the funny David Cross who certainly ups the program but I still very concerned if the comedy can get any better. This is one show, we will just have to watch and see, and it airs tonight at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.
