Watching Way Too Much TV For You!

This fall brings new dramas and comedies, new loves, and new hopes, so here is the rundown on what too watch, and what too avoid this fall. Now, NBC has “Comedy Night Done Right” but does this one new comedy this year hold up to that name like 30 Rock or The Office. Community stars some great players like Joel McHale but is that enough…

community-nbc-joel-mchale-castNBC Says:

From Emmy Award-winning directors Joe and Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) comes “Community,” a smart comedy series about higher education — and lower expectations. The student body at Greendale Community College is made up of high-school losers, newly divorced housewives, and old people who want to keep their minds active. Within these not-so-hallowed halls, “Community” focuses on a band of misfits, at the center of which is a fast-talkin’ lawyer whose degree has been revoked (Joel McHale, “The Soup”), who form a study group and end up learning a lot more about themselves than they do about their course work. In addition to McHale, the series also stars: Gillian Jacobs (“The Book of Daniel”); Yvette Nicole Brown (“Rules of Engagement”); Danny Pudi (“Greek”); Alison Brie (“Mad Men”); and comedy legend Chevy Chase (“Saturday Night Live”). “Community” is a Krasnoff Foster Entertainment, Harmonious Claptrap and Russo Brothers production in association with Sony Pictures Television and Universal Media Studios. Russ Krasnoff (“The Soloist”), Dan Harmon (“The Sarah Silverman Program”), Joe Russo (“Arrested Development”), Anthony Russo (“Arrested Development”) and Gary Foster (“The Soloist”) serve as executive producers. Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot that was written by Dan Harmon. Good: Community is comedy done right that is for sure. I mean how could you really lose with legend Chevy Chase, a pop in by the hilarious John Oliver, and The Soup’s Joel McHale in the lead role. I have seen the first two episodes and I can say that I am fully on board after the second episode “Spanish 101” that addes Ken Jeong as Senor Chang a crazy spanish teacher that gives some very funny material to Chevy and Joel. The pilot that airs tonight is solid mostly thanks to a hilarious “Breakfast Club” squence and from the supporting players. I particually love the acting by Yvette Nicole Brown who delivers some great zingers. But the show isn’t without its flaws…

The Not So Good: Sometimes it is just not funny and in the pilot stumbles to find its footing especially with how to incorporate all the characters. But I am so happy to see Joel McHale in primetime and check this out!

Community premieres tonight after The Office at 9:30/8:30c. It will air on Thursdays at that time until it switches to 8/7c on October 8th.
