Watching Way Too Much TV For You!

Do you know about Starz? Maybe you do, maybe you don’t but Starz is a premium paid channel similar to HBO or Showtime and now it is branching out into scripted TV. Last year it had the funny Head Case and the serious Crash on the air and now they are adding another to the mix. This time it is a new comedy from the great Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars, Cupid) and is called Party Down! Here is my review of the show that premieres this Friday at 10/9c on Starz.

The Cast of Party Down

The Cast of Party Down

What Starz says:   A cast of some of the brightest young acting talent has begun to “Party Down,” and the Hollywood catering business will never be the same. Production has started in Los Angeles on “Party Down,” the new original series from Starz Entertainment, in association with its television production sibling Starz Media. This is the first series Starz Media is producing for Starz. “Party Down” follows a Los Angeles catering team – a sextet of Hollywood wannabes stuck working for tips while hoping for their “big break.” Each episode of this half-hour comedy finds the hapless catering team working a new event – and inevitably getting tangled up with the colorful guests and their absurd lives.

Fun Facts: I have seen the first five episodes of the series and expect great guest apperances from Enrico Colantoni, Marilu Henner, and Ed Begely Jr.

He is joined by the rest of Ron’s team who are pretty much all failed Hollywood actors who all bring there unique sense of hopelessness and problems to the group. The group includes the young Kyle Bradway (Ryan Hansen, the old woman who is still looking for love Constance (Jane Lynch), the nerd of the group Roman Debeers (Martin Starr), and the young woman with the marital problems Casey (Lizzy Caplan).

The Good…:  Almost everything about this comedy works. The cast is like a group of friends, you actually believe these people see each other everyday and now all the weaknesses. Rob Thomas is awesome at bring the most crazy real funny moments that make you laugh. Each episode takes place in one place, where ever the venue of the catering event is and you feel like you are watching a documentary. The crew films it that way and it adds a sense of voyeurism to it, which works. The real star for me in the first six episodes is Jane Lynch. Jane is just plain genius as the role of Constance, and you just laugh when she says one word, just awesome.

The Bad…:  The only complaint that I have with Party Down is that at times it is a little slow. This maybe for the fact that it is show as a docu-style production but I do not know why I always fell like I am waiting.

Overall:  This is the second in a week to amaze me, the first being Better off Ted, it is consistently funny and there is really nothing like it. If you do not have Starz, get it, if you can’t watch it online!
